Between Chisec and Raxruja in Alta Verapaz there are the well known, but not very frequented Grutas Candelarias. These caves are mainly flooded by a river, but they have some dry spots. You can swim with the stream INSIDE the cave for a few hundred meters. Then you have to clib up the rocks, before the river disappears completely in the dark.
Parts of this caves have been ritual places.

A very impressive adventure, but this is what most of the tourists see.

In this area are about 70 different caves, some connected with others. One of these caves is nearly not known, but very, very special. From the Grutas Candelarias, you walk about 30 minutes through the wild jungle until you arrive at the entrance of another cave. Dont try to find that alone ;-) There is an idigena community where you can find a guide. (Ask for the dry cavetour www.asociasionasiqmuc.guate.ws)

The cave itself is impressing.
Loads of stalagmites, stalaktites and strange stone formations.

Parts of the caves are covered with bats.

You walk about 10-15 minutes through the cave until it ends up in a huge  open dome up to 60 meters high - a very special ritual place from mayan times. I did not attend to any ritual there, but it was a mind moving experience to be there.
