On the way from Guatemala City to Coban,
there is the big Quetzal-Biotop. A few kilometers after you find a small sign on the street pointing to Cueva Chicoy. After a short ride on a dirtroad you have to stop at the dead end.

We have been there in June 2005:

"A steep pathway right through the woods leads us up to the old Mayan ritualplace. In front of us is a huge hole in the ground. (about 20-30 diameters and about 70m deep).

The deeper we step down, the wider the cave gets. Strange smells of insence....
Down there is a fire burning.
The light from above seems to be unnatural.

Down there we end up in a ritual. It seems to be some kind of cleansing for a whole family.

They throw candles, insence, eggs and  seeds in the fire. The shaman uses mantras and gestures.  A chicken is going to be sacrified..... The full program ;-)

We dont take fotos there, even if it would have been very interresting.
